When using AI and automation to stay a step ahead of the crowd, it’s important to be respectful of other players. Making enemies of either the administration or other players by indulging in antisocial behavior such as monopolizing resources is almost never a long term winning strategy.
With that thought in mind, here is a list of proposed laws of gaming robotics:
- Do not antagonize other players. This rule applies to behavior that might be interpreted as deliberate, such as kill stealing and blatantly ignoring them.
- Do not inconvenience other players beyond what will be expected through normal gameplay on a multiplayer server. Almost all multiplayer games have some etiquette, some even formalized in written rules, regarding taking turns and sharing areas or items.
- Don’t exploit game mechanics beyond social norms for the game in question. Using AI and botting should be done with tact and subtlety. If the game rewards something like sending a command or sequence of commands repeatedly and the average player does that 100 times a day, automating a process to do it 10,000 times a day to gain an edge will probably be viewed unfavorably by players and administration of the game.
- Last but not least, don’t exploit accessibility features unreasonably. If the game administrators have taken steps to make the game more playable by people with special needs, be respectful.
